Details: For nearly a half-century, through creative ups and downs, Bob Dylan has held an esteemed place in the cultural canon alongside singular greats like Pablo Picasso and Miles Davis. The only rock poet to be nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature, Dylan’s work transcends its base in rock music to be considered worthy of study in the halls of the academy, even while he consistently shuns such honors in favor of touring the world on a non-stop basis as he approaches the age of 70. In this three-part course, we will examine the influences that shaped Dylan and the nature of his genius in hopes of discovering what his unique contribution to our culture has been.
Instructor: Seth Rogovoy is the author of Bob Dylan: Phophet, Mystic, Poet and THE ESSENTIAL KLEZMER: A Music Lover’s Guide to Jewish Roots and Soul Music. Seth is editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living and for nearly twenty years was a rock and jazz critic, primarily for the Berkshire Eagle. Seth has taught a variety of college-level and adult-ed courses on klezmer, Jewish music, and Bob Dylan, including at his alma mater, Williams Rogovoy Revue and Seth Rogovoy and the Grove Street Band.
