Did you just receive plants for Mother’s Day and are trying to figure out where to plant them?

Try creating a beautiful container garden!

Back in 2014, J member and Master Gardener Kristin Carnahan taught a class on container gardening. Since the weather is finally getting warmer, we’re sharing some of Kristin’s advice.

  • The first step is to choose your container. Consider not only whether it will be a window box or an outdoor pot with proper drainage, but also whether it will be in sunlight or shade.
  • Next it’s time to consider your plants. Kristin suggests choosing either complementary or monochromatic colors and to combine trailing and spilling plants with bushy or filler plants.
  • Remember to include some tall vertical grasses or climbers on supports to fill out the shape of your garden.
  • To create more visual interest, combine tiny and large flowers with foliage plants.
With proper watering and fertilizing, you’ll soon have outdoor pots that will add a welcome burst of color around your home!
