Container Gardening: Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers
Revisiting a Life Lessons Class from May, 2014: Container Gardening: Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers
Did you just receive plants for Mother’s Day and are trying to figure out where to plant them?
Try creating a beautiful container garden!
Back in 2014, J member and Master Gardener Kristin Carnahan taught a class on container gardening. Since the weather is finally getting warmer, we’re sharing some of Kristin’s advice.
- The first step is to choose your container. Consider not only whether it will be a window box or an outdoor pot with proper drainage, but also whether it will be in sunlight or shade.
- Next it’s time to consider your plants. Kristin suggests choosing either complementary or monochromatic colors and to combine trailing and spilling plants with bushy or filler plants.
- Remember to include some tall vertical grasses or climbers on supports to fill out the shape of your garden.
- To create more visual interest, combine tiny and large flowers with foliage plants.
With proper watering and fertilizing, you’ll soon have outdoor pots that will add a welcome burst of color around your home!
